The Moment You Realize Your Anxiety Isn’t Mental
It’s Spiritual
We talk a lot about burnout and mental overwhelm, but we rarely talk about what happens underneath all of that, the spiritual layer, the inner voice, the quiet knowing that refuses to die, no matter how “good” life looks from the outside.
Today’s guest post is written by Blanka Molnar, one of the contributors to my recent Podcast Episode: What 9 Healers Wish Everyone Knew About Trauma, where we explored how the body carries emotional and spiritual messages long before the mind is ready to understand them.
Her story is one so many of us live through in silence: a life that appears polished on the outside, while the inside is slowly cracking open to something more profound, truer, and impossible to ignore.
What she shares here isn’t just about burnout.
It’s about awakening.
The Soul’s Language: When Mental Struggles Are Spiritual Wake-Up Calls
On paper, everything looked shiny and perfect.
I had my family and friends around me, I had my “normal” everyday life, and I had THE job. I had worked in corporate real estate in Budapest, in a role that sounded impressive when I introduced myself at meetings and parties. My life looked Pinterest-perfect and well-put-together.
BUT every morning, a quiet voice (sometimes louder) inside me whispered, “This isn’t it.”
At first, I ignored it. Then I tried to reason with it, and then I continued to negotiate with it like I did in the boardroom. “Just a little bit more. You can handle a year or two more”. “You got this! You can do hard things”. And ALL the positive affirmations you can list.
I told myself I should be grateful. I was still young and naïve, so much ahead of me and so much to learn. I could not just quit and give up. But deep down, I wanted to scream. Each and every day, as I was getting ready to leave the house.
The Whisper That Turned into a Shout
For years, I heard that whisper. It surprised me in moments of stillness. It visited me in random places, like in the elevator riding up to our office, during meetings, when my body was present, but my spirit was somewhere else.
But like many of us, I did what society taught me to do: I pushed through. I shut down the whisper with busyness and doing more. More coffee, more snacks. More goals. More “shoulds.” Being louder (and more uncomfortable in me). I was living to the outer, but my inner world was fading.
Until I couldn’t take it anymore, I couldn’t hide.
My body started speaking louder. I was exhausted all the time.
I procrastinated on simple tasks. Food became comfort and a way to numb what I didn’t want to feel and to fill up the void that was consuming me.
I wasn’t lazy. I wasn’t broken. I was stuck between my mind, which was rationalizing my life, and my soul, which was bugging me to acknowledge the reality of what was in front of me.
When the Soul Speaks Through Struggle
Modern society calls it burnout, depression, or anxiety, but sometimes, it’s “just” the soul trying to get your attention.
The soul doesn’t shout, at least not at first. It starts with gentle whispers:
“You’re not where you should be. This is not your place.”
“You are out of alignment.”
Then the second sign comes in the form of a deeper discomfort. You start to feel drained, restless, maybe even resentful.
And if you still don’t listen, the third one arrives like a storm. Like a wake-up storm where you do not have a choice anymore.
That’s the one that hurts. The breakdown, the health scare, the sudden ending, and the ugly moment you can’t ignore.
Because by then, your soul isn’t whispering. It’s crying out for you to come home and return to your roots.
The Culture of Fixing Ourselves
We live in a world obsessed with fixing.
Fix your mindset. Fix your business. Fix your relationship. Fix your body. Fix your face and teeth.
Everywhere we turn, somebody is promising a quick solution, a 5-step plan, or a 30-day transformation. Band-Aids are on every corner.
And yet, all that fixing keeps us spinning further away from the quiet knowing inside.
The truth is: you don’t need to be fixed. You were never broken. You were born “whole”.
You just forgot for a while. The layers we built and put on ourselves have been hiding your core from yourself.
True healing isn’t about becoming somebody new. It’s about remembering who you are beneath the noise and all those layers. Like peeling the onion.
It’s about coming back to your own rhythm, pace, power, and truth.
When Pain Becomes the Gate to Something New
Looking back, my numbness, the exhaustion, the procrastination, and the overeating were my body trying to protect me.
It was saying, “If you won’t stop for your soul, I’ll stop you for your body.”
That’s what many of us call a breaking point, but in reality, it’s a wake-up call (or more like a shake-up call).
The soul is trying to speak to us in the only language it knows: energy, emotion, embodiment.
When we swing too far away from alignment, life gives us small nudges first… and then bigger ones.
In my case, that third sign came as a burnout, the kind that strips away all illusions of control.
And underneath that pain, I finally heard the truth:
“You are meant for something different. Slower. Deeper. Truer.”
Listening Instead of Fixing
We often think healing starts with swinging into action, like starting a course, a new diet, or having a fancy plan in place.
But true healing begins with listening and tuning in.
Start in small steps. Slow down. Breathe.
Sit in silence without having distractions in your hand and ask, “What are you trying to tell me?”
Journal and ask questions like: “If my soul could speak right now, what would it say?”
Notice what your body does when you push too hard. The sighs, the tension, the fatigue. The reactions when you say “Yes,” although you would rather say No. They’re messages, not malfunctions. Do not hate them. They are not your enemies. Make them your friends.
Awareness itself is medicine.
When we stop running away from ourselves and our discomfort and begin listening to it, everything starts to shift.
Remembering Wholeness
It took me years and shedding many tears to understand that my struggles and challenges weren’t signs of failure.
They were invitations.
They were the soul’s way of saying: “Wake up. It’s time to remember. You’ve forgotten how powerful you are.”
Each time we feel stuck, heavy, or lost, we can choose to see it differently.
Not as a setback, but as a sacred pause.
Not as punishment, but as direction and a reset opportunity.
Because sometimes the very thing that breaks you open… is the thing that sets you free.
The soul doesn’t speak in words.
It speaks in sensations, resistance, longing, and silence.
Listen deeply, before it has to shout.
And remember. You always have a choice.
Closing Reflection
You don’t have to wait for the third, painful sign to wake up.
You can choose to listen now.
If you’re feeling that quiet whisper that something in your life feels off, even if it “looks fine”, trust it.
That’s your soul guiding you back home.
